An introduction to Ethics in Robotics and AI

An Introduction to Ethics in Robotics and AI Produced with EPIC / National University of Singapore (NUS), February 2019

Last February, during the celebrations of the Chinese New Year, a Book Sprint took place at the National University of Singapore (NUS).  A small group of academics wrote: “An Introduction to Ethics in Robotics and AI” textbook.

The collaborative book writing exercise happened within the framework of the European-Pacific Partnership for ICT collaboration in Research, Development and Innovation, named “EPIC Initiative”. The programme involving the EU, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore aims to strengthen the ties between these regions through academic, industrial and political partnerships and promotes research and development in various and future-oriented areas.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics can sound like science fiction but in fact they affect our everyday lives. In recent years, there has been increased attention in their possible impact. What are the current and future advantages and risks of AI and Robotics? Which are the ethical considerations that should be considered?

They produced “An Introduction to Ethics in Robotics and AI” tries to provide an answer to that. It offers a first glimpse on the ethics of robots and artificial intelligence to university students; policy makers and professionals. But it is also accessible for anyone looking for an introduction to the topic.

It offers a general background to understand the ethical dilemmas connected to AI and Robotics, followed by a section about how businesses can manage risks, rewards and ethical implications of AI technology. It also analyses the psychological factors that mediate how humans and AI technologies interact and the impacts on privacy and finally provides concrete AI applications ranging from healthcare to warfare.
